When The CLINK Initiatives started, the obvious path was to build programmes. Youth development, digital skills, wellbeing, climate, employment. Each area has real needs, and each one could justify a department.
We did not take that path, for two reasons.
The duplication problem
In most places there are already organisations with deep technical expertise working on health, protection, climate, education and livelihoods. Some have been doing it for decades. A new organisation arriving with a generalist programme in the same space usually duplicates effort, competes for the same funding and fragments the sector further.
What is often missing is not another provider. It is coordination: someone who can bring young people, specialists, institutions and resources together around a shared challenge, and hold the collaboration together long enough for something to happen.
What The CLINK Initiatives actually contributes
The CLINK Initiatives contributes youth engagement, innovation processes, partnership coordination, technology awareness and evidence. Partners contribute technical expertise, institutional systems, resources and scale. Young people contribute lived experience, ideas and energy.
Nobody has to pretend to be good at everything. The specialist stays specialist. The CLINK Initiatives stays the connector and the platform.
What this means for partners
If you already work on a youth issue, we are not trying to replace your programme. We are trying to bring young people into it, test new approaches alongside it, and document what works so it can spread.
That is a smaller ambition than building everything ourselves. It is also one that is more likely to be useful.
